MINUTES OF THE COMMON COUNCIL

BRAZIL, INDIANA

FOR JANUARY 12, 2022

A meeting of the Common Council was held on January 12, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. in Brazil City Hall.  The meeting was called to order by Council President Steve Bell.       

ROLL CALL: Shane Litz, Karen Boes, Angie Modesitt and Steve Bell.  Brad Deal and Mayor Brian Wyndham were absent.  

The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Council President Steve Bell.

OTHERS PRESENT:

  • Clerk-Treasurer Karen McQueen, City Attorney Traci Orman, Brittany Sauter, Joey Bennett with the Brazil Times and Frank Phillips with WAMB – “The Breeze.” 

PRAYER was said by Angie Modesitt.             

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Shane Litz made a motion to approve December 8, 2021 minutes, seconded by Angie Modesitt.  Motion passed 4-0.  Shane Litz then made a motion to approve the December 22, 2021 minutes, seconded by Karen Boes.  Motion passed 3-1, Angie Modesitt abstained.   

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: NONE   

ORGANIZE MEETING DATES AND TIMES 2022:

  1. Set Meeting dates and times – Shane Litz made a motion to retain the same schedule as 2021, seconded by Angie Modesitt.  Motion passed 4-0. 
  2. Election of Officers – Karen Boes made a motion for to nominate Steve Bell as the Council President, seconded by Angie Modesitt.  Motion passed 3-1.  Steve Bell abstained.  Shane Litz then made a motion to nominate Brad Deal as Vice President, seconded by Karen Boes.  Motion passed 4-0.
  • Board Appointments –
    • Plan Commission Appointments: Mayor Brian Wyndham, Greg Sanders and Councilman Karen Boes.  Angie Modesitt made a motion to approve the appointments, seconded by Shane Litz.  Motion passed 4-0.   
    • BZA Appointments: Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet McClellan recommended Evertt Snyder and Troy McQueen for the appointments.

Shane Litz made a motion to approve, seconded by Angie Modesitt.  Motion passed 4-0.               

OLD BUSINESS:  NONE

NEW BUSINESS:

  1. Resolution opposing LEG regarding elimination of business personal property tax – Council would like to table Resolution #1-2022, pending more information from the Clerk-Treasurer Karen McQueen and City Attorney Traci Orman.  Council will meet again the 4th Wednesday of January if information is obtained. 

COUNCIL COMMENTS:  

  • Karen Boes – Street lights in Edgewood were approved by Duke Energy to be installed.       

MAYOR COMMENTS: NONE

ADJOURNMENT: Brad Deal made a motion to adjourn meeting; seconded by Shane Litz. Motionpassed 4-0. Meeting adjourned at 5:37 p.m.
