MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY

BRAZIL, INDIANA

FOR MAY 22, 2019

 

A meeting with the Board of Public Works was held on May 22, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers of the Brazil City Hall.  The meeting was called to order by Mayor Wyndham.

ROLL CALL: Mayor Wyndham, Ruthann Jeffries, Linda Messmer, City Attorney Traci Orman

OTHERS PRESENT: Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet McClellan, Police Chief Clint McQueen, Fire Chief Jake Bennett, Daniel Rose

PLEDGE: The pledge to the Flag was led by Mayor Wyndham.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Linda Messmer made a motion to approve minutes from May 8, 2019; seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 3-0.

OLD BUSINESS: NONE

            POLICE CHIEF REPORT: Chief Clint McQueen

  • There were 633 calls for service in April, which led to 88 incident reports, 21 arrests, 52 tickets, 92 warnings, 21 crashes, 15 vehicle impounds and 4 handgun permits. Linda Messmer asked why there were more calls for the police department than last year.  Chief McQueen said that it’s due to better record keeping and more police coverage.
  • This summer the Police Department will be down to 12 officers due to 2 officers at the Police Academy.
  • Chief McQueen has been working with Planning and Zoning on abandoned vehicles. Some have been tagged and need to be towed, but due to weather conditions it has not been completed.
  • Mayor has talked with Clay County Humane Society and they are pleased with the communication with the Police Department.
  • The new Police Station is coming together and is being worked on daily.

 

 

NEW BUSINESS:

  • Memorandum of Understanding-Senior Citizens – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the Memorandum of Understanding in which the City of Brazil agrees to provide a one-time amount of $4,000 to supplement the 2019 budget for the Senior Citizens of Clay County for the purpose of assisting with transportation costs.; seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 3-0.
  • Cleanups (see list)- Ruthann Jeffries made a motion to approve the Cleanup list for May 22, 2019; seconded by Linda Messmer. The motion passed 3-0.
  • Mowing (see list)- Ruthann Jeffries made a motion to approve the mowing list for May 22, 2019; seconded by Linda Messmer. The motion passed 3-0.

 

BOARD COMMENTS: Linda Messmer asked for an update on the Sidewalk Project and the Water Project in Edgewood.  The Mayor commented that both projects are about to be completed.  Ruthann Jeffries asked about the Fire Training that took place on May 21, 2019 in the Council Chambers.  Chief Bennett said that this is training that the EVAC provides to the Fire Department and Ambulance service every 2 months.

 

AUDIENCE COMMENTS: Daniel Rose said that there is a property located at 622 N Colfax that has not been mowed and needs to be condemned.  Also, there is a n old meter well outside 726/728 N Meridian that needs filled.  Mayor Wyndham will send someone to look at these issues.

  • Utilities – Ruthann Jeffries made a motion to approve; seconded by Linda Messmer. The motion passed 3-0.

ADJOURNMENT: A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Ruthann Jeffries; seconded by Linda Messmer.  The motion passed 3-0.  Meeting was adjourned at 10:25 a.m.
