MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
BRAZIL, INDIANA
FOR JUNE 14, 2023
A meeting with the Board of Public Works was held on June 14, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers of the Brazil City Hall. The meeting was called to order by Ruthann Jeffries.
The Pledge was led by Ruthann Jeffries.
ROLL CALL: Linda Messmer, Ruthann Jeffries, Deputy Clerk Melissa Dorsett, City Attorney Traci Orman (Mayor Wyndham was absent.)
OTHERS PRESENT: Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet McClellan, PZ Assistant Cathy Hunter, DLC Media Reporter Frank Phillips, Brazil Times Reporter Brand Selvia
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the minutes from May 24, 2023, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0.

OLD BUSINESS: NONE
FIRE REPORT: Jake Bennett (unable to attend due to a structure fire emergency)
- Traci Orman requested, on behalf of Fire Chief Bennett, that the Board approve Caden A. Heyman for hire, with a tentative hire date of July 28th, subject to confirmation from the Fire Chief. Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the hiring of Caden A. Heyman as a full-time fireman with a tentative hire date of July 28th, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0. Caden will be replacing a fireman who is due to retire this year.

NEW BUSINESS:
- Approval – Pay App #6 – Van Hoy & Sons – Water Works Improvements –
Linda Messmer made a motion to approve payment of Pay App #6 to Van Hoy & Sons for work completed on the Raw Water Main Relocation Project for $44,393.50, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0. The project is complete except for some surface grading and clean-up. The balance to finish the project is $43,458.50.
- Planning and Zoning
- Mowing -see attached list – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the Mowing List for June 14, 2023, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0.
- Clean Ups – see attached list – Linda Messmer made a Motion to approve the Clean Up list for June 14, 2023, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0.
- Unsafe Building – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve an Unsafe Building Order at 221 N. Desart St., seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0.
Clerk’s Office – Ruthann Jeffries made a motion to approve the claims from the Clerk’s Office, seconded by Linda Messmer. The motion passed 2-0.
Utilities’ Office – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the claims from the Utilities’ Office, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0.
FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS:
- The next Board of Works meeting will be on June 28, 2023.
ADJOURNMENT: A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Linda Messmer, seconded
by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0. The meeting was adjourned at 10:17 a.m.
