THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY

BRAZIL, INDIANA

FOR MAY 26, 2021

A meeting with the Board of Public Works was held on May 26, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers of the Brazil City Hall.  The meeting was called to order by Ruthann Jeffries.

Pledge was led by Ruthann Jeffries.

ROLL CALL: Ruthann Jeffries, Linda Messmer, City Attorney Traci Orman, Deputy Clerk Melissa Dorsett

OTHERS PRESENT: Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet McClellan, Fire Chief Jake Bennett, Police Chief Clint McQueen, Daniel Rose

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:  Linda Messmer made a motion to approve minutes from May 12, 2021; seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.

OLD BUSINESS: None

POLICE CHIEF REPORT: Chief Clint McQueen

  • There were 1330 calls for service in April which included 70 incident reports, 32 arrests, 35 tickets, 77 warnings, 11 crashes, 17 vehicle impounds and 19 handgun permits.
  • Chief McQueen requests that the Board appoint Homer Knopp as a part-time special officer to cover special circumstances, vacations, and miscellaneous events.  Linda Messmer made a motion to appoint Homer Knopp as a part-time special officer, with full powers, and compensation of $20/hr., seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.
  • City Officer John Hood has resigned and is now employed with the Clay County Sheriff’s Department.  Officer Hood has a K9 dog which is currently property of the City of Brazil.  Chief McQueen has asked that the Board approve the transfer of the K9 dog from the City to County property.  Linda Messmermade a motion to approve the transfer of a K9 Belgian Malinois, known as Bane, to the Clay County Sheriff’s Department due to the handler John Hood resigning from the City and now employed at the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.

FIRE CHIEF REPORT: Chief Jake Bennett

  • The Fire Department is accepting application for a new officer after the resignation of      Ryan Brown. 

 NEW BUSINESS:

  1. Approval-Mowing List (see attached list) – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the Mowing List for May 26, 2021, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.
  2. Approval-Cleanup List (see attached list) – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the cleanup list for May 26, 2021, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.
  3. Joink-Right of Way Permit – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the Right of Way Permit for Joink at Allied Insurance at 808 W. Jackson, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.

CLAIMS:

  1. Clerk’s Office – Ruthann Jeffries made a motion to approve the claims from the Clerk’s Office; seconded by Linda Messmer.  The motion passed 2-0.
  • Utilities’ Office – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the claims from the Utilities’ Office; seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.

ADJOURNMENT: A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Ruthann Jeffries seconded by Linda Messmer.  The motion passed 2-0.  Meeting was adjourned at 10:41 a.m.
