THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY

BRAZIL, INDIANA

FOR SEPTEMBER 8, 2021

A meeting with the Board of Public Works was held on September 8, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers of the Brazil City Hall.  The meeting was called to order by Mayor Wyndham.

Pledge was led by Mayor Wyndham

ROLL CALL: Mayor Wyndham, Ruthann Jeffries, Linda Messmer, Deputy Clerk Melissa Dorsett, City Attorney Traci Orman

OTHERS PRESENT: Fire Chief Jake Bennett, Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet McClellan

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:  Linda Messmer made a motion to approve minutes from August 25, 2021, seconded by Ruthann Jeffries. The motion passed 2-0.  Mayor Wyndham abstained because he was absent from the August 25th meeting.

FIRE CHIEF REPORT: Chief Jake Bennett

  • July 2021 had 73 calls for service compared to 52 in 2020.
  • August 2021 had 85 calls for service compared to 65 in 2020.
  • The Fire Dept. responded to several structure fires and motor vehicle accidents in July and August.
  • Firefighters completed an IDHS State Certified, Driver Operator General class in August.
  • The Fire Department’s Aerial ladder and all ground ladders were tested by an independent testing company in August.  Only minor issues were noted.
  • Hiring Process – Candidates have completed the aptitude testing and agility testing and will move on to interviews with the Pension Board later this month.  Prospective candidates will be presented to the Board of Works for interview after completing this phase.

NEW BUSINESS:

  1. Public Hearing- Covid 19 Grant – A Public Hearing to close out the 1st Round of the Covid 19 Grant from 2020 was opened at 10:19 a.m.  Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet McClellan discussed the details of the grant and will provide minutes. The Public Hearing was closed at 10:21a.m.

CLAIMS:

  1. Clerk’s Office – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the claims from the Clerk’s Office; seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.
  • Utilities’ Office – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the claims from the Utilities’ Office; seconded by Ruthann Jeffries.  The motion passed 2-0.

FUTURE AGENDA: Possible meeting on September 29th to discuss the trash contract.

ADJOURNMENT: A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Ruthann Jeffries seconded by Linda Messmer.  The motion passed 3-0.  Meeting was adjourned at 10:21 a.m.
