MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
BRAZIL, INDIANA
FOR JULY 25, 2018
A meeting with the Board of Public Works was held on July 25, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers of the Brazil City Hall. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Wyndham.
ROLL CALL: Mayor Wyndham, Linda Messmer, Cathy Hunter, City Attorney Traci Orman. Ruthann Jeffries was absent.
OTHERS PRESENT: Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet McClellan, Fire Chief Jake Bennett, Street Superintendent Brian Bemis, Michael Wallace, Brian Baumgartner
PLEDGE: The pledge to the Flag was led by Mayor Wyndham.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Linda Messmer made a motion to approve minutes from July 11, 2018; seconded by Mayor Wyndham. The motion passed 2-0.
OLD BUSINESS: NONE
AUDIENCE COMMENTS:
- Michael Wallace asked that the water bill of $92.00 be waived. The bill is from a tax sale property that he purchased. City Attorney Traci Orman said that it is a City Ordinance that the water bill follows the sale of the property and for the water to be turned back on at this property the bill must be paid. Mayor Wyndham commented that before purchasing property one should always check the outstanding utility bills. Request for waiver was denied.
FIRE CHIEF REPORT: Chief Jake Bennett
- May 2018 had 48 calls for service, 45 in 2017
- June 2018 had 44 calls for service, 49 in 2017
- Probationary Firefighter Cody Garrison has completed his Module A and Module B training and is scheduled to go through live burn skills to complete his Module C.
- The Department conducted Drill Training in May and June on Fire Department Connections and Structure Fire tactics.
- Firefighters gave Fire Safety talks and Station tours to preschool and Kindergarten students, and participated in YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, Kroger’s Summer Celebration, Brazil Public Library’s Summer Reading program and Cub Scouts.
- Fire Chief Bennett gave safety talks at the Brazil Housing Authority properties to communicate the need for cooking safety and instructions on how to handle fire and weather emergencies.
- Firefighters installed smoke detectors in 4 homes during June.
NEW BUSINESS:
- Brian Baumgartner (former Chris Greenwood property) -Sewer Adjustment – Brian Baumgartner recently purchased property that was formerly owned by Chris Greenwood was present to request a yearly sewer adjustment. Mayor Wyndham made a motion to approve the 10% yearly sewer adjustment; seconded by Linda Messmer. The motion passed 2-0.
- Clean Ups (see list) – Mayor Wyndham made a motion to approve the clean up list for July 25, 2018; seconded by Linda Messmer. The motion passed 2-0.
- Mowing (see list) – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve the mowing list for July 25, 2018; seconded by Mayor Wyndham. The motion passed 2-0.
CLAIMS:
- Clerk – Mayor Wyndham made a motion to approve; seconded by Linda Messmer. The motion passed 2-0.
- Utilities – Linda Messmer made a motion to approve; seconded by Mayor Wyndham. The motion passed 2-0.
